Admin. history/Biographical sketch:
The Banting and Best Chair of Medical Research was established by the Board of Governors as the result of a special grant of the Ontario Legislature in May 1923.  F.G. Banting was appointed the first Director.  Research under the provisions of this Chair began in July 1923 and C.H. Best was appointed to the position of research associate and given $2500 for the 'promotion of Medical Research under his direction'.   Name changed to Banting and Best Department of Medical Research on May 22, 1930.

Scope and content: Ledger containing the signatures of users of the Dept. of Pathology Library (1923-1930), and a users' ledger with titles of material borrowed from the Lister Library in the Banting Institute (1932-1952). Also consists of lab notes, research plans and notes, correspondence with researchers, laboratories and corporations, laboratory rules and procedures, research papers, miscellaneous records on mice experiments pertaining to immunotherapy, insulin and carcinogenesis, and files on various lab apparatus. Other records include lecture notes, manuscripts of published and unpublished works by members of the staff (notably A.M. Rappaport and W. Stanley Hartcroft), reprints of articles by staff; and translations of articles bearing upon research in which staff was involved. One album containing signatures of participants to the XIth International Congress of Biochemistry held on July 8-13, 1979; other events from 1980-1982, and 1990.
