Admin. history/Biographical Sketch:
Established January 1, 1850 as a result of the passing of An act to amend the Charter of the University...  It provided for "a Council of five members, to be called the Caput of the University, which Caput shall consist of the President..., the Deans of the three Faculties of Law, Medicine and Arts,and a fifth member to be the convocation of the said University annually...". The Caput was dissolved April 22, 1853.  Under the University of Toronto Act of 1906, the Caput was re-established  as a committee of the Board  and  was to be comprised of the President as Chairman, the  Principal of University College, the heads of the federated universities, the heads of the federated colleges and the Deans of the faculties.   The enforcing of discipline was only one of many duties of this Committee.

Scope and content:  Minutes of Caput  (1907-1978).  Also included are records pertaining to student clubs and to the  Presidential Advisory Committee on Disciplinary Procedures (the Campbell Committee). There are also numerous individual disciplinary case files for examination irregularities and for student misbevaviour, from 1930 to 1977, including files from the CAPUT hearing, 21 May 1974 - 25 June 1974, into the conduct of Tony Leah and William Schabas, in preventing the delivery of an address by American urbanologist, Edward Banfield, at the University. Video documents the University of Toronto Caput hearing on the conduct of Tony Leah and William Schabas in preventing the delivery of an address by urbanologist Edward Banfield at the University on March 12, 1974 on the grounds that he held racist views. The hearings were chaired by Prof. Albert Abel.
