Admin. history/Biographical Sketch:
The origins of this department date from August 1852 when a Chair of History and English Literature was created.  By March 1864 this department was split, to create a Department of History and a Department of English Literature. In 1884 the Chair of History and Ethnology was established.  In 1891 the department was described as the Dept. of Modern History.  Four years later it was changed to the Dept of Modern History and Ethnology.  On July 1, 1906 the word 'modern' was dropped.  Finally in 1922 the name reverted simply to Dept. of History, when Ethnology was made a separate department.  Throughout this period the Department of History was part of University College.  In 1975 it became a university-wide department.
