Admin. history/ Biographical Sketch: A proposal for an observatory was first initiated in 1926. Negotiations continued for several years and in 1935, Jessie Donalda Dunlap presented the Observatory as a memorial to her husband, David Alexander Dunlap. "Planned in consultation with Dr. C.A. Chant, first Director of the Observatory, the project had three objectives: astronomical research, the training of advanced students at the University, and the fostering of public interest in astronomy."  For further information see The History of the David Dunlap Observatory.

Scope and content:  Correspondence files of the Director of the  Observatory arranged by author and subject (1932-1970), subject files  (1950-1964).Photographs include negatives (1932-1933) produced from original prints in the David Dunlap Observatory scrapbook and consisting of images of Prof. Clarence Augustus Chant, Dept. of Astronomy, participating in sod-turning ceremony for the David Dunlap Observatory; construction of the Observatory; exterior and interior views of the Observatory shortly after its completion.
