Admin. history/Biographical Sketch: Established January 1, 1850 as the Chair of Mental and Moral Philosophy when the University of King's College became the University of Toronto. On November 15, 1889 the discipline was divided into two chairs: the Chair of Psychology, Logic and Metaphysics and the Chair of History of Philosophy and Ethics. In 1891 these areas were cited as the Department of Psychology and the Department of Philosophy respectively.

Scope and content:  Applications for teaching positions and financial aid, student inquiries and correspondence to and from George Sidney Brett and Fulton Henry Anderson as chairmen (1925-1958); lecture and course notes, essays, research records and examinations relating to their classwork (1912-1958); manuscripts, reprints, book reviews and correspondence relating to Anderson's research (1935-1955); personal records of Anderson (1926-1957) and photographs. Correspondence, subject and financial files of the Graduate and Undergraduate Departments; records relating to appointments and committees; correspondence with Dept. of Ethics, Division of University Extension, Library, colleges and other universities during the chairmanship of Thomas Anderson Goudge (1947-1970) as well as records relating to the publishing of "Symposia: A Student's Journal of Philosophy"(ca 1968-1969)
