Admin. history/Biographical Sketch: 
Frank Scott Hogg, was born at Preston, Ontario on July 26, 1904, the son of Dr. James Scott Hogg and Ida Barberon.   Following graduation from Galt Collegiate Institute in 1922.  He attended the University of Toronto, graduating with a BA in 1926.  During his fourth year he came under the influence of Dr. C.A. Chant and chose the Astronomy option in the Mathematics and Physics course.  On the advice of Dr. Chant he went to Harvard for graduate study, obtaining his PhD degree in 1929.  Over the next year he was on a Parker Travelling Fellowship, visiting Cambridge, Gottingen, and other European universities.  In 1930 he married Helen Battles Sawyer.  In 1934 he and his wife, Dr. Helen Hogg moved to Toronto from Vancouver Island to join the staff of the Department of Astronomy as a Lecturer. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1936, Associate Professor in 1942 and Professor and Head of the Department in 1946. He was based from 1935 at the Dunlap Observatory and succeeded Dr. R.K. Young as Director on his retirement in 1946.

Dr. Hogg was President of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada for one year and Assistant Editor of its Journal for more than 13 years.  He died of a heart attack at the age of 46 in Richmond Hill on January 1, 1951.
