Humphrey Newton Milnes was born in Oneida, Upper State New York  on November 2, 1919.  His family emigrated to Toronto in 1925  He graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts in 1941 and a Master of Arts in 1947.  He studied at Ohio State where he received his Ph.D in 1949. He returned to the University of Toronto and in 1951 was appointed Assistant Professor of German in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Seven years later he was promoted to Associate professor.  He became full professor in 1963.   Prof. Milnes held various administrative appointments during his career at the University, including Secretary of the Combined Dept. of German in 1954 and 1958, Chairman, Combined Dept. of German in 1962 and 1966 and Co-Grad. Secretary from 1964-1967.   While at University College he helped to establish the U.C. Archives following the Centennial Celebrations in 1953.  

Prof. Milnes died on March 23, 1981.

Scope and content:
This fonds consists of one accession of personal papers of H.N. Milnes, professor in the Department of German and Chair of the Department of German.  Fonds contains records relating to his education at Ohio State University, correspondence and other records relating to University College, London when he was visiting professor in 1959- 1960,  manuscripts, notes, research materials, teaching materials, correspondence with students, and administrative records relating to the Department of German.
