Biographical Sketch: Herbert Abraham Clark, and his four children, William H. D., Harriet A. L., Martha (Mattie) and E. Ritchie all graduated from the University of Toronto.  Herbert A. Clark was born in 1872 Scarborough, the son of James and Martha Ann Davis Clark.  He received his early education at schools in Markham and St. Catharines.  He enrolled in the University of Toronto studying history and economics in 1892 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (University College) degree in 1895. Following his graduation, he studied law at Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the bar in 1898.   He practiced law for 45 years in Toronto and was a partner in the firm of  Mulock , Milliken, Clark and Redman.  He continued to serve the University of Toronto as a member of the executive committee of the University College Alumni Association, and as a member of the Senate of the University.   He died in 1943.

William H. D. Clark graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science from the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering in 1924.  He became a noted engineer and an authority on power plants.  He joined Combustion Engineering-Superheater Ltd. In Montreal as head of the service and erection department.  He rose to become chief engineer in 1938, president of the company in 1958 and finally chairman of the board in 1968.  He died in 1970.

Harriet A. L. Clark and her sister Mattie both graduated with Bachelor of Arts degrees in 1934 from University College.   Harriet studied law in the 1940s at Osgoode Hall Law School, and Mattie continued graduate studies at the University of Toronto, receiving a Master of Arts degree in Canadian History in 1937.  Mattie later taught at Branksome Hall girl’s school, Tilbury High School and Danforth Technical School.    Harriet died in 1992 and  Mattie Clark died in 1996.

Scope and content: Correspondence, notes, programs, photoprints, maps, drawings, reports, and other materials documenting the academic activities of the following members of the Clark family: Herbert Abraham (BA 1895), William (BASc 1924), Harriet Anna Laura (BA 1934), and Martha (Mattie) Maud Isobel (BA 1934, MA 1936).
