Biographical Sketch: Born 1919. Professor of East Asian studies in the Department of History.

Scope and content: Correspondence, notes, pamphlets, programs, posters, photographs, slides, periodicals, maps, books and other material documenting the teaching and reseach activities of John L. Cranmer-Byng relating to Sino-Western relations in the 18th and 19th centuries, the Cultural Revolution in China, Norman Bethune, and environmental issues. 

Includes a selected list of items in the Hankow Collection, University of Hong Kong (1959); periodicals (including China Pictoral, Chinese Medical Journal and China's Medicine); a copy of page 16 from Illustrated London News (7 January 1854) with fascimilie of Imperial Chinese dispatch; still photographs from the film Shining Red Star (1974); itinerary, diaries, and photographs from the joint University of Toronto-York University trip to China (October, 1975) and Cranmer-Byng's files as book review editor for Seasons, the journal of the Federation of Ontario Naturalist (1979-1982).
