Biographical Sketch: Joseph Stanley Will (1874-1964) earned a BA (University of Toronto, 1897) and PhD (Columbia, 1921). He married Esther Margaret Berry in 1938 and they had two children. Before joining the University of Toronto, he taught at Manitoba College and Dartmouth College. He was appointed Lecturer in the Department of French at the University of Toronto in 1910. Two years later he was promoted to Associate Professor and by 1916 he had attained the position of Professor. Will’s primary research interest was Protestantism in France. He retired as professor emeritus in 1945.

Scope and content: The papers consist of some correspondence and a few manuscripts and other personal papers.  By far the bulk of the accession consist of card files compiled during the many years Prof. Will researched Protestantism in France in particular and French literature in general.  Unfortunately, the original arrangement of these card files was disturbed and some cards are not in any apparent order.  Apart from the manuscript for what appears to be the first four chapters of the unpublished Volume I, no other manuscripts for Prof. Will’s  other works are contained within this accession.
