The UofT Archives is available to provide class presentations and instruction on archival research and discovery of our holdings for undergraduate and graduate students. Working with faculty, we aim to provide opportunities and support for students to conduct original, hands-on research with primary materials, learn about the interpretation of primary sources, and interact with historical records in a range of formats.
What we can do:
- Visit or host a class to introduce archival research (we can tailor our lecture to a particular subject area or assignment)
- Provide input on assignments that involve archival research
- Offer ongoing reference services and guidance to you and your students
Due to volume of requests, space constraints, and limited staff, we require sufficient lead time. For classes including assignments using archival materials, we require one semester notice. For presentations and tours, we ask to be contacted at least one month prior to the class. When you contact us, please let us know the following:
- Proposed date and time of the class
- Class size
- Goals for what students will learn from the presentation
- Themes or subject areas you wish to cover and suggestions of specific material you would like to display
- If the class will also involve an archival assignment, an outline or plan for this project
